Graduate School Projects
Descriptions of the High Tech High Graduate School of Teacher Leadership courses and my corresponding projects/work.
HTH 202: Linking Research to Practice
This class was an introduction to our new roles as teacher researchers. We began the process of exploring our fierce wonderings (academic curiosities), keeping track of our thoughts in an inquiry journal. The final project of the course was a written description of our schools (Setting Description), which will ultimately become the introduction for our thesis. PROJECT: Setting Description HTH 200: Equity, Diversity & Design Principles Throughout this course we explored diversity and equity in our classrooms. The final project (Put It Into Practice) gave us an opportunity to select an area of inequity in our classrooms and address it through a new practice. My practice, graffiti discussions, addresses the issue of inequity in student participation during class discussions. PROJECT: Graffiti Discussions |
HTH 240: Implementing Inclusive Classrooms
This class explored the variety of ways to create more inclusive classroom environments. Our professor, Azul Terronez, pushed us to think of differentiation as a "way of thinking, not necessarily a bag full of strategies." We focused on creating multiple entry points for diverse learners at various levels of readiness. Each grad student selected an activity/project in his/her class to document with a Discovery Card (a two-sided card capturing a moment and describing the process and our reflections. My project focused on student choice, inquiry and real-world connections. PROJECT A: Experience San Diego Project Throughout the course, Terronez, modeled what choice could look like in a classroom. After each course reading, we were given the opportunity to select a method of response that correlated to our interests and learning style. Since I'm a musician, I chose to write and record a song in response to Alfie Kohn's essay, Choices For Children. PROJECT B: Choices For Children (Video) |
HTH 216: Deeper Learning Through Projects
This class got down to the core of what High Tech High does as an organization. Each grad student brainstormed, designed and implemented a project. We used Adria Steinberg's 6As to guide our designs, integrated the process of peer critique and even tuned our projects twice with members of our cohort. Special emphasis was placed on making adult-world connections within our projects. Here is my project: A calendar celebrating the contributions of the Hellenic world. PROJECT: It's All Greek To Me HTH 212: Leadership for School Change
In this course we explored education's history (particularly the roots of progressive education). Each teacher found a way to play a leadership role in their school. We selected books to push our thinking on school change. Through conversations with colleagues, we developed ideas for stirring positive growth and change. By the end of the project, we were asked to boil our dreams down to JUST ONE STEP! PROJECT: Dreaming & Doing |
